Register of Businesses and Organizations

 

The Hawaiian Historical Society Register of Businesses and Organizations program recognizes and registers agencies, businesses, institutions, organizations, clubs, and other groups that have been established in Hawai‘i for twenty-five or more years. Applicants meeting the eligibility requirements will be registered with the Hawaiian Historical Society as a historic agency, business, institution, organization, club, or group and will be recognized in a printed Register.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicants shall have been established in Hawai‘i for twenty-five or more continuous years of service prior to the date of application.

2. Applicants must submit copies of acceptable sources of proof that demonstrate the applicant was established in Hawai‘i for twenty-five or more years of service prior to the date of application. Acceptable sources of proof include copies of general excise license certificates, tax returns, and so on. Applications and their supporting documentation will be reviewed and verified by the Hawaiian Historical Society Register Committee.

3. If the applicant's name has changed one or more times, the applicant is still eligible for recognition as long as it has continuously provided the same service.

4. The applicant does not have to be from Hawai‘i, but must meet the other eligibility requirements.

5. Applicants will be required to provide a historical description of their agency, business, institution, organization, club, or group, including the date it was founded, the names of the founders, its location, its purpose, and its activities. Applicants are also encouraged to submit photographs with their historical description.

 

Categories

1. Agency. All county, state, and federal agencies.

2. Business. All types of businesses.

3. Institution. All types of institutions, including schools.

4. Organization. All types of organizations, including non-profits and community groups.

5. Club. All types of teams, including canoe clubs, running clubs.

6. Groups. All other organized groups.

 

Certificates of Recognition and The Register

1. The HHS will produce and distribute a printed Register that contains all groups that have registered by the printing deadline.

2. Certificates of Recognition will be available for businesses and organizations who would like them for display purposes. Applicants who were established during the monarchy prior to the overthrown of Queen Lili‘uokalani on January 13, 1893 shall be recognized with a special certificate. A nominal fee will be charged.

 

Fees

1. REGISTRATION IS FREE.

2. Fee tfor one certificate: $25

3. Additional certificates may be purchased for $10 per certificate.

The Society’s mission is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the history of Hawai‘i and the Pacific islands so that present and future peoples throughout the world will recognize and appreciate this history. The Society serves its membership and the community by publishing scholarly materials focused on this history; offering a library program that provides information and referral services to the community; promoting the discovery, collection, and preservation of documentary historical materials; and sponsoring public programs for the benefit of the wider island community.
