February Scenic Express railway on the Hamakua coast

The Hawaii Consolidated Railway Ltd. operated a sightseeing special called the “Scenic Express” along the Hāmakua Coast of Hawai‘i Island. Steam locomotive #196 hauled several unique open-air coaches past Maulua Gulch in the 1920s. These cars were later boarded up and converted to carry bagasse from Hilo Sugar Company in Wainaku to the canec factory in Waiākea. (Tai Sing Loo, photographer. HHS #2270.)
