The Hawaiian Historical Society is pleased to present its annual History of Hawai‘i Calendar for 2009. The theme of the 2009 calendar is antique roads of Hawai‘i. Historic roads and bridges are significant features in Hawai‘i’s cultural lanndscape and are worth preserving. Preservationists are working to protect Maui’s Hāna Belt Road (Huelo to Kipahulu) and the Kaua‘i Belt Road (Princeville to Ha‘ena), which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Naniloa Drive Overpass on Maui and ‘Ōpaeka‘a Bridge and Pu‘u‘opae Bridge on Kaua‘i are also on the Hawai‘i or National Register. Other notable historic routes are Haleakalā Highway and the road system in Volcanoes National Park.

The featured images in the 2009 calendar are reproduced from the Society’s collection of approximately ten thousand images.
