The Story of Lāna‘i

Talk Story and Photo Essay
Presented by Richard M. Towill

The Hawaiian Historical Society invites its members and friends to a program titled The Story of Lāna‘i, Talk Story and Photo Essay presented by Richard M. Towill, grandson of George C. Munro. The program will be held at the Kana‘ina Building (Old Archives Building) on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace on Thursday, November 8, 2007. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the palace grounds.

George Campbell Munro (1866—1963) ran the Lāna‘i Ranch on Lāna‘i Island from 1911 to 1928. In his retirement years, he wrote the manuscript for The Story of Lāna‘i, a record of his own life and work on the island. The book has now been published by the Munro family. Along with Munro's recollections of his own life, the book includes a natural history, a record of the lives of the local Hawaiian ranching community, and rare photographs restored for this publication.

Richard M. Towill, grandson of George C. Munro, will share his stories and recollections of the ranching history of Lāna‘i and show slides of historical photographs of Lāna‘i from the Munro family collection.

Copies of The Story of Lāna‘i will be available at the program and Richard Towill will be happy to sign them.
