The Hawaiian Historical Society invites members and friends to attend a panel discussion and presentation titled Pohaku: The Art & Architecture of Stonework in Hawai‘i, moderated by David Cheever. The program is based on the new book of the same title. The program will take place on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Kana‘ina Building (the old archives) on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace. Refreshments will be available at 7:00 p.m.; the program starts at 7:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.
Pohaku is a book that tells the history of the islands through various examples of stonework from ancient times to the present. Included among the more than one hundred examples of stonework are fishponds, heiau, churches, quarries, structures of the ali‘i, government buildings, educational institutions, commerical buildings, and homes. Fifty-six architects, journalists, historians, and other writers contributed essays on the stonework examples. Award-winning photographer Doublas Peebles took the 250 color photos included in the book.
The panelists for the evening are all contributors to Pohaku. They will discuss the research that was involved and the discoveries that they made while preparing their essays for the book. The panelist are:
- Nancy Bannick, journalist and historic preservationist;
- David Cheever, principal of David Cheever Marketing;
- Chuck Ehrhorn, AIA, principal of C & J Land Planning, LLC;
- Frank Haines, FAIA, chairman of the board of Architects Hawai‘i; and
- Andrew Yanoviak, AIA, CSI, well-known architect and writer.
