Hawai‘i Place Names:
Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites

Presented by John R. Kukeakalani Clark

The Hawaiian Historical Society invites the public to a special program, Hawai‘i Place Names: Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites, presented by John R. Kukeakalani Clark. It will take place on Thursday, March 14th, 2002, at the Old Archives Building (the Kana‘ina Building) on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace. Refreshments at 7:00 p.m., program at 7:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

Author and ocean enthusiast John R. K. Clark will give a special lecture on how his research for the Beaches of Hawai‘i series became Hawai‘i Place Names after thirty years and six books. Mr. Clark will share some of the difficulties he encountered while researching the mo‘olelo—story or history—of how shore-related places around the Islands were named. Besides perusing numerous maps, reference books and newspapers, Mr. Clark interviewed hundreds of people, many of them native Hawaiians, in his pursuit of place names and their mo‘olelo. Many of these previously unrecorded oral histories can now be found in his book, Hawai‘i Place Names.

John R. Kukeakalani Clark is the author of the beaches of Hawai‘i series: The Beaches of O‘ahu, The Beaches of Maui County, The Beaches of the Big Island, Beaches of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, and Hawai‘i’s Best Beaches. His latest book is Hawai‘i Place Names: Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites. Mr. Clark, a Punahou graduate, received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. He is the deputy fire chief of the Honolulu Fire Department. A former lifeguard, he is a planning consultant for water safety and ocean recreation projects and the owner of Kalaheo Sports Productions, a company that produces ocean sports events

Copies of Hawai‘i Place Names: Shores, Beaches and Surf Sites will be available for sale at the program at a special discount price of $10.40 ($12.95 retail).
