Koreans on the Plantations:
The Early Years

A Lecture by Dr. Wayne K. Patterson

The Hawaiian Historical Society and the Center for Korean Studies, University of Hawai‘i, are pleased to present a lecture about the first Korean immigrants to Hawai‘i, their background, their plantation experiences, and their organizing activities.

The program will be presented on Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in the auditorium of the Center for Korean Studies building on the University of Hawai‘i Manoa campus. Refreshments will be served at 7:00 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The event is free, and the public is invited.

Wayne Patterson is professor of East Asian history at St. Norbert College in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and is currently visiting professor of Korean history at Harvard University. He is the author of two books about the Koreans in Hawai‘i: The Korean Frontier in America: Immigration to Hawai‘i, 1895–1910 (1988) and The Ilse: First-Generation Korean Immigrants in Hawai‘i, 1903–1973 (2000), both published by the University of Hawai‘i Press. Both books will be available for purchase at the meeting at a 20 percent discount.

The Center for Korean Studies is located at 1881 East-West Road on the Manoa campus. Parking is available (at $3.00) in the lot adjacent to the building.
